One race to finish off the FINNPORTS 2011 AUSTRALIAN FINN CHAMPIONSHIPS

As has been the case all week, light SE'ly winds greeted competitors on the final day of racing at the FINNPORTS 2011 Australian Finn Championships. With rain on the horizon everyone was keen to get the racing over and done with.

Ed Wright (GBR) took the line honours in the first race of the day, closely followed by Vasilij Zbogar (SLO). Rob McMillan continued his late regatta streak of form to post a 4th place.

Unfortunately with a large rain cloud smothering the race course the wind died out, running any chance of race officer David McLachlan completing the final race of the series.

Wrigh'ts victory in the only race of the day broke the deadlock between himself and Zbogar, giving him the title by a solitary point. Anthony Nossiter's (AUS) consistency across the series assured him of third overall and first Australian.

IFAA President John Shallvey praised the hard work of Cronulla Sailing Club and all its volunteers, especially Andrew Baglin and Jim Wells, for such a well-run regatta. Thanks must also go to Regatta sponsor FINNPORTS and its director Rob McMillan for his support of the event and his passion in getting Finns out sailing.

With record numbers of newcomers taking part this year, as well as a very high quality of top competitors making the effort to come to Sydney for the event Finn sailing in Australia is coming into a golden age.

Top three overall:
1st - Ed Wright 12 pts
2nd - Vasilij Zbogar 13 pts
3rd Anthony Nossiter 26 pts

Top three Australians:
1st - Anthony Nossiter 26 pts
2nd - Tim Castles 52 pts
3rd - Rob McMillan 59 pts

Racing remains tight at the top at the FINNPORTS 2011 AUSTRALIAN FINN CHAMPIONSHIPS

After four days of racing at the 2011 FINNPORTS Australian Finn Championships racing is still extremely tight. Vasilij Zbogar (SLO) and Ed Wright (GBR) had indentical results today, both scoring a 1st and a 2nd. Both sailors go into the final day locked together on 11 points apiece. There is also a tussle on for Kiwi supremecy between Nik Burfoot (NZL) and Matt Coutts (NZL) who are only separated by one point.

The elderly gentlemen of the fleet showed glimpses of their class today. Rob McMillan (AUS) had his best day of the regatta so far. He was the runaway leader in the first race until the front-runners lost sight of the leeward gate and the chasing pack over ran him. John Condie (AUS) put his new on-water rehydration regime to test between races, with the result being he was at the fron to the fleet at the first mark of the second race.

Tommorow's two races bring the regatta to a close.

Top 5 after 8 races: >
1 - Vasilij Zbogar (SLO), 11pts
2 - Ed Wright (GBR), 11 pts
3 - Anthony Nossiter (AUS), 23 pts
4 - Matt Coutts (NZL), 28 pts
5 - Nik Burfott (NZL), 29 pts

Tricky day on Day 3 at the 1 2011 AUSTRALIAN FINN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day 3 of racing at the FINNPORTS 2011 Australian Finn Championships presented competitors with very challenging conditions off Cronulla Sailing Club. Light and shifty conditions predominated, and there were plenty of chances to gain or lose precious positions from start to finish.

The master of the day was Vasilij Sbogar (SLO) who won two of the day's 3 races. Sbogar didn't have it all his own way, having to fight hard to ward off anybody waiting for him to slip up. In the end his superior boat-speed in the light airs helped him prevail. He has now drawn level with Ed Wright (GBR) for 1st place overall. Anthony Nossiter (AUS) took out the remaining race and now has the upper hand over Nik Burfoot (NZL) to round out the top three.

Racing continues tomorrow and Friday.

World Champ in command at FINNPORTS 2011 AUSTRALIAN FINN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Another cloudy day greeted competitors on day 2 at the 2011 Finnports Australian Finn Nationals. Thankfully the lightning stayed away and all 23 competitors enjoyed a chance to stretch their legs. After three races in moderate southerly conditions Ed Wright (GBR) is the runaway leader. Wright mastered the fluky conditions of Cronulla Sailing Club to finish the day with race scores of 1, 2, 1. Vasilij Sbogar (SLO) also sailed well in rain affected wind to take the honours in race 2.

The top Australian after today is three time Olympian Anthony Nossiter, who sits in third overall. "Nocka" has young Aussies James Paterson and Tim Castles hot on his heels chasing the silverware which has just about become a permanent fixture on his trophy self over the past 10 years.

Racing continues tomorrow from 1200 with three races scheduled.

FINNPORTS 2011 AUSTRALIAN FINN CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 1

The 2010 Finnports Australian Finn Championships is demonstrating a resurgence in interest in the class in Australia. A record fleet of 23 boats are registered to take part in racing scheduled to take place in front of the world famous Cronulla Beach from 3rd - 7th January 2011.

Joining in along with the strong local presence are a number of international sailors who have decided to train in Australia rather than brave the cold and snow of Europe. These guests include 2010 Finn Gold Cup winner Ed Wright (GBR) and multiple Laser Olympic medallist Vasilij Sbogar (SLO). Flying to flag for Australia is 3-time Olympian Anthony Nossiter, whose next door neighbor and past Laser World Champion Nik Burfoot (NZL) is keeping trans-Tasman rivalry going.

Racing was scheduled to begin today, however one lap into the first race of the day lightning started to loom on the horizon and Cronulla Sailing Club officials decided it was safer to head back for the security of the boat park.

Racing continues tomorrow from 1200 with officials expected to make up one of the lost races on top of the two already scheduled.

SAIL MELBOURNE 2010

Sail Melbourne has finished for another year. A great international fleet of 22 boats turned out for some tricky and variable weather conditions.

The spoils were shared by the British sailors, with Ben Ainslie taking the gold medal, Giles Scott went home with silver and Ed Wright took bronze.
Ausralia's best performers were Tim Castles and Brendan Casey, who both narrowly missed the medal race.

We thank all the overseas compteitors who came down under for both PIR and Sail Melbourne and hope they have been inspired to return in future years for their Winter traning.
Next stop on the IFAA calendar is the Nationals at Cronulla SC from 3rd - 9th January. Details are available below..

Perth Internation Regatta 2010

A strong international fleet hit the waters of Fremantle from 16 - 21 November for the first PIR. Most sailors had made the trip to Perth to test out the waters for the Perth 2011 ISAF World Championships in December next year.

Unfortunately the world famous "Freo Doctor" sea breeze struggled to build with temperatures in the high 30's for most of the week, and only 5 of the scheduled 9 races were completed. Many novel ideas and pieces of technology were trialled in preparation for next year with mixed success. The organisers have been open to feedback in order to make the event in December 2011 the best ever. For full results see the Perth 2011 website.

The Aussie Finn fleet focus now moves on to Sail Sydney where a good tournout is expected on Sydney Harbour from 6 - 9 December.

PERSONAL SAIL NUMBERS

Please see the following message from our illustrious IFAA President John Shallvey regarding personal sail numbers:

Many of the Finn countries around the world have allowed for personal sail numbers. We propose to also allow this for a small fee for the privilege. The only thing we insist is that when boats arrive in the country they are firstly allocated an AUS number in line with the ISAF Hull numbers. Please log your intent when you next pay subs so we don't want any duplication.

So for those so wishing go consult your numerologist, Feng Shui man or crazy gypsy women for those special numbers.

Please note that not all numbers are available.

2010 SAILING SEASON

Well Finn sailors, a new season is upon us and I must say it is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting ever.  The IFAA has never, and I mean never had to register this many new boats, the Finn fleet is looking healthier than ever, thanks largely to the efforts of Rob McMillan.  There are also some new faces/names; Courtney, Jake (young Jake as opposed to rejuvenated Jake), Stephen, Gus … and the list goes on, welcome to the Finn fleet I look forward to seeing you all on the water.  It’s good to see Patto and Tim putting in some good performances OS. Welcome back to the old campaigners, the scuttlebutt is that a couple of the more seasoned campaigners (one triple Olympian and a former world Laser champ) in the Sydney area have new boats on the way, it will be very competitive at the front of the fleet, and good “viewing” from further back in the fleet. I cant wait to see Aarons new boat, I’m guessing it’s been a few years since anyone built a Cedar strip planked Finn, from the pictures I’ve seen it looks pretty special.  All we have to do now is work out how to measure it…

he 2010 season see the return of Andre Blasse as the Finn measurer, the IFAA is supporting Andre in his quest to become a fully fledged ISAF measurer.  Andre has a wealth of knowledge and is in constant touch with Juri so feel to sing out if you have any questions.

The Nationals at Sorrento are shaping up to be fantastic, having said that we are always on the lookout for event sponsors so if you or your company wish to sponsor the IFAA or the Nationals please contact John or myself (contact details are on the contacts page). See here for a link to the regatta poster.

look forward to seeing all the new boats and faces on the water in the near future.
