Australian Nationals Regatta Report
The Australian Nationals was held in conjunction with Black Rock Yacht Club’s Go for Gold Regatta over three days from November 30 to December 2, 2007.
Due to the forthcoming Finn Gold Cup the regatta attracted 25 entries from Australia, Spain, Denmark the US and a large contingent from the UK. Included in the entries was the reining World Champion, Rafael Trujillo Villar; the reining Olympic Gold Medalist, Ben Ainslie; former World Champion, Jonas Hoegh-Christen and three time Australian Olympic representative Anthony Nossiter.
The first of three races scheduled for Day 1 was held in light breezes, while the sea breeze filled in. Races 2 and three where sailed in a steady 10-12 knot sea breeze in what was to become the trend for the weekend.
The Brits showed their good form early, with Ben Ainslie finishing day 1 with the lead over fellow countryman Ed Wright and current world Champ, Rafael Trujillo Villar.
Day two started as day one finished with the sea breeze filling in early with a solid 12-15 knot sea breeze. Ben Ainslie again showed a clean pair of heels to the fleet with two wins from the first two races of the day with the Nocka, Brendan and the rest of the Internationals fighting out their own private battles at the top of the fleet.
The last two races of the day where sailed in a solid 15 knots with wins going to Jonas Hoegh-Christen and Ben Ainslie in what would end up being the final race of the regatta.
Racing on day three was abandoned at about 1.00pm, after winds gusting into the high 20’s dominated most of the morning.
The final placings for the Go for Gold regatta showed Ben Ainslie resuming his usual spot at the front of the fleet, closely followed by Ed Wright, who will be fighting it out with Ben for the British Olympic spot. Third was s consistent Anthony Nossiter.
Anthony Nossiter was award the Australian Championship as the first Australian followed by Brendan Casey and a fast improving Warwick Hill. Rob McMillan was the first senior and Warwick the first junior.
Thanks has to go out to the Black Rock Yacht Club, who showed why they are widely regarded as the premier dinghy club on the bay with a flawless display of race management. All bodes well for the upcoming Sail Melbourne Asia Pacific Regatta and the Finn Gold Cup.
